Fixed Glass That Frames the View

A picture window doesn't open. No sash, no crank, no track. With fewer frame parts in the way, you get more glass, more natural light, and a cleaner look at the backyard, the tree line, or the sky above a two-story foyer.

Picture windows work best in:

  • Living rooms and family rooms built around a view
  • Stairwells, foyers, and tall walls you'd never reach to open anyway
  • Spots over a tub or kitchen counter where light matters more than airflow
  • The center of a bay window or a wider window wall

With nothing moving, there's little to wear out. Not sure fixed glass fits the room? Our guide to picture windows and fixed glass covers the tradeoffs.

Pair Fixed Glass With Windows That Open

Most rooms still need fresh air, and bedrooms need an operable window for emergency escape. That's why picture windows usually show up in combinations rather than alone.

  • Casement, picture, casementA picture window flanked by casement windows for a wide view with real airflow.

  • Double hung, picture, double hungA picture window centered between two double hung windows for a classic, balanced look.

  • Picture over awningAn awning window below the fixed glass to vent the room, even in light rain.

  • Transom over a windowA fixed transom stacked above another window for extra daylight up high.

During the in-home consult, we sort out which panes open and which stay fixed, room by room.

Energy-Efficient Picture Windows for Indiana Weather

With no moving seams, a fixed window is naturally tight against drafts. The glass package handles the rest. Our picture windows use ClimaGuard Low-E glass with argon gas fill and Duralite warm-edge spacers. Together they slow heat loss in winter, block a share of summer sun on south and west walls, and help keep condensation off the glass edges.

That matters on a big pane. The U.S. Department of Energy puts heat gain and loss through windows at 25 to 30 percent of home heating and cooling energy use. For rooms that run cold in January, our triple-pane vs. dual-pane guide explains when the Gold Line upgrade makes sense.

How We Replace a Picture Window

Big glass leaves less room for error, so the prep matters.

Before anything is ordered, our professionally trained installers:

  • Measure the rough opening
  • Check the existing frame for rot or water damage
  • Confirm whether code calls for tempered safety glass in that spot

On install day, the old unit comes out and the new window goes in square and level. Then it gets flashed, insulated, and sealed so water and air stay outside. If you're wondering how much of the old frame stays, our full-frame vs. pocket replacement guide breaks it down.

The owner stays your point of contact the whole way, and the job isn't done until you've walked through it and signed off.

Picture Window FAQs

Quick answers to what homeowners ask most before replacing a picture window. Still have a question? Give us a call at (317) 689-0759.

Do picture windows open?

No. A picture window is fixed glass sealed into its frame. If you want airflow in the same spot, we pair it with a casement, awning, or double hung window beside or below it.

Can I put a picture window in a bedroom?

Yes, as long as the room has a separate operable window that meets egress code for emergency escape. A fixed pane can't serve as an exit, so it shouldn't be the only window in a sleeping room.

Are picture windows more energy efficient than windows that open?

Usually, yes. With no sash seams, there's less room for air leakage. The glass still drives most of the performance, so Low-E coatings, argon fill, and the U-factor matter more than the style itself.

Can a new picture window match my other windows?

Yes. Our picture windows come in the same Gold, Silver, and Bronze lines as our operable windows, with matching colors and optional grids, so a combination unit reads as one window.

Does a large picture window need tempered glass?

Sometimes. Building code calls for safety glazing in certain spots, like large panes close to the floor, glass near doors, and windows next to a tub or shower. We check this during the consult and spec it into your quote.
